We start and finish in the fascinating World Heritage listed city of Cusco and take on a moderate trek to the majestic Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) and Ausangate. The trails provide spectacular scenery through Peruvian valleys and over mountain passes to enjoy the spectacular Andean wilderness. From our magnificent campsite at the foot of Ausangate we make our way up scenic passes to enjoy the incredible views. Delight in the unique natural wonder of Rainbow Mountain on this challenging and rewarding hike.

Day 1.- Cusco – Upis – Wayna Ausangate Cocha

We will start the tour Ausangate Trek + Mountain of Colors 6 Days with the early landing of the hotel at 5:00 a.m. to go to Ocongate (3,500 m.a.s.l.) crossing this beautiful place and we can visualize the chain of the Vilcanota and the mountain Apu Ausangate. We will arrive at the Upis community (4,250 m.a.s.l.), our first stop for breakfast, we will also meet with the rest of the team. After breakfast we will continue our tour crossing a path until we reach the first camp of Upis (4,400 m.a.s.l.), once we will replenish energy with a delicious lunch and after a small rest we will go to the Ausangate Cocha Lagoon (4,480 m.a.s.l.) where we will have a short guide and free time to explore the area.

Day 2 .- Wayna Ausangate Cocha – Abra Arapa – Hatun Pucacocha

We will have breakfast early to start the hike in ascent for 2 hours until we reach the Abra Arapa (4,800 m.a.s.l.), in this area if we are lucky we can admire the camelids like the vicuñas. Continuing the walk this time it is time to descend for about 3 and a half hours, in the course we can visualize the beautiful high Andean lagoons Yanacocha and pucacocha. We will arrive at our camp place Hatun Pucacocha (4,400 m.a.s.l.) where we will have lunch and spend the night. After the short break we will have time to explore the area and the nearby lagoons.

Day 3.- Hatun Pucacocha – Anantapata – Warmisaya – Surinecocha

We will get up early for breakfast and start an uphill hike for 2 hours, pass through dry mountains, beautiful green valleys and see huge glaciers. Continuing the walk we have to descend for 1 hour and a half to Anantapata (4,750 m.a.s.l.) where we will have lunch to recover our energies. After a short break we will walk uphill for 2 hours in the direction of Warmisaya (4,985 m.a.s.l.), here we can see reddish mountain chains.

We will descend for 45 minutes towards Surinecocha (4,800 m.a.s.l.) where we will set up our camp.

Day 4.- Surinecocha – Rainbow Mountain – Quesiuno – Ausangate Cocha

We will start the day with a good breakfast, we will walk for 2 hours until we reach one of the most popular attractions the Mountain of Colors (5,100 m.a.s.l.), from here we will contemplate the sunrise and we will take advantage of being the first to take pictures. Then we will descend towards the viewpoint of the Red Valley (5,050 m.a.s.l.) here we can admire an immense valley that is lost in the distance, after the agreed time we will return by the same road towards Quesiuno (4,376 m.a.s.l.) to have lunch and recover energy. At the end of the case we will start an ascent for 2 hours and a half, in the course we will see beautiful valleys, herds of llamas and alpacas, we will arrive at our camp Ausangate Cocha (4,500 m.a.s.l.). At night we can appreciate the constellations and explore the area a little.

Day 5.-Ausangate Cocha – Palomani Pass – Sorapata

We will get up very early for breakfast and we will start with the hike in ascent until we reach the highest point of the whole tour the Abra Palomani (5,200 m.a.s.l.), from here we can admire the Vilcano mountain range in its splendor. After a short break we will descend for an hour to the community of Huchuy Phinaya (4,700 m.a.s.l.) to taste our lunch. After recovering energy we will begin another ascent through the Jampa ravine along the way we will observe the huge glaciers of the Callangate chain, we will arrive at our last camp in Sorapata (4,650 m.a.s.l.). We will have dinner and spend the night.

Walking time: 6 horas aprox.

Day 6.- Sorapata – Abra Jampa – Pacchanta – Cusco

We will wake up with a great view of the snowy three peaks, we will have breakfast and start with the ascent walk towards the Abra Jampa (5,070 m.a.s.l.), walking we will see green valleys and the presence of peasants working. Then we will descend for about 3 hours until we reach Pacchanta (4,100 m.a.s.l.), in the course we will see the beautiful lagoons succession, we will stop to perform a ceremony to the mountains in gratitude for having taken care of us. We will arrive at Pacchanta, a small community famous for its hot springs which we can enjoy and relax our muscles, we will recover energy a rich lunch, after the rest the mobility will pass through us to take us back to Cusco.

Itinerary

Your guide will meet you in Cusco 6am in the morning, and take you via private transportation to the starting point of our trek at Tinqui where we load up your gear onto the pack horses. We will hike for the next 3 hours or so and then you will enjoy a local lunch, after lunch you will continue hiking to our first camp. This day we only hike for a few hours until we arrive at the village of Upis. Here you will have the opportunity to take a soak in the hot springs, while enjoying coca tea, and relaxing your muscles until dinner. With two passes to cross today, we wake up early at 5am with a hot mug of tea or coffee tea brought to your tent and you will fuel up with a big breakfast for the day ahead. The morning starts with a hike up Arapa pass (4,958m/16266ft) before we descend a bit to our lunch spot near Lake Puma Cocha- a deep blue lake and a perfect stop for a break. Along the way, you will see local herders and llamas, Ausangate Mountain to your left, and you will have your expert guide explaining the history of the locals and talking about the landscape along the way. After lunch, we continue uphill for our second pass, Pucacocha (5000m/16404ft) where if you are lucky you may see condors and vicuñas. We descend to our campsite of Chillca where you will be surrounded by high mountains and incredible hanging glaciers, where you can watch for the glacier crashing into the lake below! As always, camp will be set up for you to change and rest your weary legs while dinner is being prepared. Today starts with Chillca pass (5051m/16571ft), a very colorful mountain but only a precursor of what is to come. After crossing the pass you enter into the Red Mountain Valley, a wildly desert landscape with vibrant colors all around, and llamas roaming the ground below. When you approach the top of the pass, you will see the beautiful Rainbow Mountain in the distance, but you are not quite there! From here, you descend to circle lake and continue walking a Peruvian flat until we are presented with one final climb to the Rainbow Mountain. Soak in the sights and enjoy what you have worked so hard to reach. We will enjoy lunch in the surrounding area, and head back down the valley to make our way to the stunning Lake Ausangate where camp will be set up and waiting for you to take a rest. Covering less kilometers today, as yesterday was a big day, we pass beautiful glacial tarns, lush green pampas, and follow the edge of the river. Today is a great day for spotting wildlife so keep an eye out for condors, and vicuñas. With only one pass to cross today, we will take our time today enjoying the deep blue lakes, and alpine glacial colored lakes along the way. If you are brave enough you can even jump in to cool off or take a swim. Views of the massive Ausangate Mountain are still visible, only today you will get to enjoy them from a new angle along with views of Pacchanta Valley. Our goal is the hot springs of Pacchanta where we will enjoy a nice soak and the views of the Ausangate Mountain above. Today is the easiest day of our trek as we make our way back to the starting point of Tinqui, walking on flat ground and celebrating our accomplishments. Once we arrive at the village you will have your last lunch while everything is packed up in our private transportation to make our way back to Cusco where. You will be dropped off at your hotel arriving around 5pm.
