Day 1 – Uyuni Colchani Incahuasi Island Salt Hotel Border

Enter the salt flats via the village of Colchani: visit the salt-factory and salt-museum for an introduction to the region’s geology and local salt-industry. Continue onto the heart of the salt desert and visit Isla Incahuasi (Fish Island), surrounded by the white salt expanse with giant cacti and a 360° panorama of the salar. Visit the iconic Dakar Monument and the “Flag Plaza” on the salt surface. Overnight stay at a salt-hotel (e.g., Tayka Salt Hotel, Luna Salada or Palacio de Sal) located at the edge of the salar. Comfortable rooms, private bathrooms, hot water and heating provided (subject to availability). Optional: Night stargazing activity on the vast salt flat under minimal light-pollution.

Day 2 – Train Cemetery Altiplano Lagoons Desert Landscapes High-Altitude Lodge

Morning departure to the famous Train Cemetery with its rusted steam locomotives from the late 19th century. Next, visit the necropolis of San Juan del Rosario. Afternoon drive through a series of high altiplano lagoons: Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarkota, Honda and Ramaditas. Here you may spot flamingos (three species) and other Andean birdlife against colourful volcanic backgrounds. Continue drive into remote desert terrain (12,000 km² area), passing dunes, red and brown ochre lithic formations.Overnight at the Tayka Desert Hotel at approx. 4,523 m above sea level. Day 3 – Eduardo Avaroa Reserve Highlights Stone Tree Geysers of Sol de Mañana Laguna Verde & Laguna Colorada Return to Uyuni

Early morning start into the Reserva Nacional Eduardo Avaroa. Visit the iconic Arbol de Piedra (“Stone Tree”) in the Siloli Desert; keep an eye out for vizcachas (wild high-altitude rodents). Arrive at the Sol de Mañana Geysers—active fumaroles and boiling mud pots at around 5,000 m elevation. Fantastic for dramatic landscape photography. Visit the Laguna Verde, an emerald lake at the foot of the Licancabur volcano. Colour is caused by sediment and mineral content. Visit the Laguna Colorada, the red-toned lagoon that is home to nesting flamingos. Brief stop in the mining-village of San Cristóbal. Farewell to llamas and vicuñas en route back to Uyuni.

Items you must bring:

The are of the Uyuni salt flats can be cold, windy and with high solar radiation. During the day it is generally sunny and the weather is pleasant but at night it can get cold. Our recommendations on what to bring with you:

  • Warm clothes.

  • Woolen socks.

  • Gloves.

  • Hat that covers your ears and protects you from the sun.

  • Warm boots (and / or rain boots during the rainy season)

  • Towel.

  • Swimming suit.

  • Lip moisturizer.

  • Sun block 30+.

  • Sun glasses (the sun rays on the surface of the salt desert create a dazzling, blinding light. Therefor we highly recommend to bring high protection sunglasses with you).

  • Flashlight.

  • Raincoat (From December to March).
