We descend to the ruins of Sayacmarca (Inaccessible Town), an intricate labyrinth of houses, plazas and water channels, perched precariously on a rocky spur overlooking the Aobamba valley. The Inca trail, now a massive buttressed structure of granite paving stones, continues along the steep upper fringes of the cloud forest through a colorful riot of orchids, bromelias, mosses and ferns. At the third pass we camp by pinnacles topped with Inca viewing platforms, overlooking the archaeological complex of Phuyupatamarca (Cloud-level Town). (B / L / D)
Day 6: inca trail Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay-Wayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
We’ll get up early to enjoy the spectacular morning views; Phuyupatamarca means the town in the clouds so early in the morning it is misty and clouds cover it. After our breakfast we’ll pack up our gear and continue following the steps down. Our first stop is at the Inca complex to explore it and learn about the construction tecniques; it’s a great place for pictures! Afterwards we’ll descend the 2,000 steps to Wiñay-Wayna in the middle of cloud and rain forest vegetation like bamboos and lianes. With luck you will see some varieties of humingbirds and the cock of the rocks “Gallito de las Rocas”, the national bird of Peru. Then we will arrive at Wiñay-Wayna and Intipata – both spectacular places to explore. We will profit from some rest time for a shower in this small lodge, as well as an early lunch before continuing on the last part of our journey toward Intipunku (Sun Gate), the principal entrance to Machu Picchu.
We will arrive in perfect time to see the tranquility of this magic place and enjoy the sunset. We will still have 40 minutes to walk down from Intipunku to Machu Picchu. Here is the best spot to contemplate the complete harmony that exists here, the footprints of a great civilization ruled by love, kindness and respect of mother nature, the perfect blend of human work and nature. After this amazing time here, we board a bus to Aguas Calientes (30 minutes). Hotel Viajeros will be waiting for us in Aguas Calientes, and we will have time to go to the hot springs before our special dinner.
