Rainbow Mountain 2-Day Trek from Cusco: Vinicunca & Red Valley

Experience Rainbow Mountain beyond the typical day trip on our 2-day Rainbow Mountain trek from Cusco. This high-altitude adventure combines Vinicunca, the Mountain of Seven Colors, the dramatic Red Valley, remote Andean landscapes and a night of camping beneath the stars.

Instead of rushing to Rainbow Mountain and returning to Cusco on the same day, this two-day itinerary allows you to travel at a more relaxed pace and reach the area before the main day-trip crowds. You will trek through the highlands of the Vilcanota mountain range, encounter llamas and alpacas, experience traditional Andean landscapes and camp in the mountains near Anantapata.

The highlight comes early on Day 2, when you hike toward Vinicunca for sunrise. As the first light reaches the mineral-rich slopes of Rainbow Mountain, the surrounding Andes begin to change color. From Vinicunca, the route continues toward the spectacular Red Valley, creating a full high-altitude trekking experience rather than a quick viewpoint visit.

With an experienced local guide, trekking support, camping equipment and carefully planned logistics, this Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley trek is ideal for travelers who want more time, fewer crowds and a deeper connection with the Peruvian Andes.

Why Choose a 2-Day Rainbow Mountain Trek?

A traditional Rainbow Mountain day tour can involve a very early departure from Cusco, several hours of driving and a demanding high-altitude hike before returning to the city on the same day.

Our 2-day Rainbow Mountain trek is designed for travelers who want a more immersive experience in the Andes.

Start closer to the mountains

Instead of completing the entire experience as a rushed day trip from Cusco, you spend the night in the highlands. This gives you more time to enjoy the landscape and reduces the feeling of rushing from one point to another.

Experience Vinicunca at sunrise

One of the biggest advantages of the two-day itinerary is the opportunity to approach Rainbow Mountain early in the morning, before the busiest part of the day. Sunrise can transform the mineral-colored slopes and surrounding peaks into a completely different landscape.

Explore Red Valley

The adventure does not end at Vinicunca. After experiencing Rainbow Mountain, continue toward Red Valley, where deep red and ochre-colored slopes create a dramatic contrast with the green Andean valleys.

Camp beneath the Andean sky

Spend the night surrounded by the high Andes, away from the city lights. On clear nights, the high-altitude environment can offer remarkable views of the stars and constellations.

Experience the landscape, not just the viewpoint

This itinerary is about more than reaching a famous attraction. Along the trail, you can experience high-altitude grasslands, Andean wildlife, local pastoral life and spectacular views toward the Vilcanota mountain range and Ausangate.

Travel with a local team

Your journey is led by experienced local trekking professionals who understand the terrain, altitude and logistics of the region and can adapt the pace according to trail and weather conditions.

Why Choose Our Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek?

Your adventure begins with an early departure from your hotel in Cusco. We travel toward the Quesiuno trailhead, passing through rural Andean landscapes and highland communities along the way.

After breakfast and a safety briefing, we begin trekking through the spectacular Vilcanota mountain range. The trail crosses open high-altitude grasslands where llamas and alpacas are commonly seen grazing among the mountains.

As we continue uphill, we reach the Pucacocha Pass, at approximately 4,876 m / 16,000 ft. From here, you can enjoy impressive views of the surrounding peaks and the dramatic Andean landscape.

After a well-deserved lunch, we continue toward our campsite at Anantapata. This remote mountain environment provides an excellent opportunity to experience the peaceful atmosphere of the high Andes away from the busy tourist routes.

In the evening, our trekking team prepares dinner while you relax at camp. If weather conditions are favorable, the clear high-altitude sky can reveal an impressive display of stars and constellations.

After exploring Vinicunca, we continue toward the spectacular Red Valley. The landscape changes dramatically as red, ochre and earthy-colored slopes dominate the valley.

After exploring the area, we descend toward the trailhead, where lunch will be served before our private transportation begins the journey back to Cusco.

  • Local knowledge – Learn about the landscape, Andean traditions and natural environment from your guide.

  • Adventure beyond the day trip – Experience Rainbow Mountain as part of a genuine two-day trekking journey rather than a rushed viewpoint visit.

  • Difficulty, Altitude & Acclimatization

The Rainbow Mountain 2-day trek is considered moderate to challenging, primarily because of the altitude rather than technical terrain.

The route reaches approximately 5,200 m / 17,060 ft, where the amount of available oxygen is significantly lower than at sea level. Even travelers who regularly hike at lower elevations may find the altitude physically demanding.

We strongly recommend spending at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or another high-altitude destination before starting the trek.

A successful trek depends on more than fitness. A gradual pace, proper hydration, adequate rest, warm clothing and following your guide's instructions are all important.

If you experience significant symptoms of altitude illness, inform your guide immediately. Your safety takes priority over reaching the summit.

Recommended fitness level: Good physical condition and previous hiking experience are recommended.

Important: This is a high-altitude trek. Travelers with medical conditions should consult a qualified medical professional before undertaking strenuous activity at high altitude.

  • Best Time to Trek Rainbow Mountain

The dry season from approximately May to October generally offers the most favorable conditions for trekking in the Cusco Andes, with clearer skies and better visibility.

However, mountain weather is unpredictable, especially at elevations above 5,000 meters. Rain, snow, wind and sudden temperature changes can occur at any time of year.

    Dry Season: May–October

    • Generally better visibility

    • Higher chance of clear mountain views

    • Cold mornings and nights

    • More visitors during the peak months

    Rainy Season: November–April

    • Higher possibility of rain or snow

    • Trails can become muddy or slippery

    • Mountain visibility can change quickly

    • Fewer visitors during some periods

For the best experience, we recommend considering both weather conditions and acclimatization, rather than choosing a date based only on the season.

  • How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain 2-day trek?

The trek is moderate to challenging because of the high altitude, steep sections, and changing mountain terrain. Good acclimatization and reasonable fitness are recommended.

How high is Rainbow Mountain in Peru?

Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, reaches approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level.

How many days should I acclimatize before hiking Rainbow Mountain?

We recommend spending at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or another high-altitude destination before the trek.

Can I see Rainbow Mountain at sunrise?

Yes. A 2-day itinerary allows us to reach the area early and experience the mountain in the morning light, offering excellent photography conditions when weather permits.

Is Red Valley included in the 2-day trek?

Yes. Red Valley can be included in the itinerary, providing an additional spectacular viewpoint of the surrounding Andean landscape.

Where does the Rainbow Mountain trek start?

The trek starts with a departure from Cusco, followed by transportation toward the trailhead in the high Andes.

What is the difference between a Rainbow Mountain day trip and a 2-day trek?

A day trip is faster and involves a very early departure from Cusco. The 2-day trek allows more time for acclimatization, photography, camping, sunrise landscapes, and a slower mountain experience.

What should I pack for Rainbow Mountain?

Bring warm layers, waterproof clothing, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, sturdy hiking shoes, water, personal medication, and a small daypack. Weather conditions can change quickly.

    Is camping equipment provided?

Yes. Camping equipment is provided as part of the trekking service, including the essential equipment needed for the overnight stay.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. If weather conditions become unsafe, the itinerary may be adjusted according to local conditions, including changes to the route, timing, or photography locations.

One of Peru’s most recognizable high-altitude landscapes, famous for its naturally colorful mountain slopes and dramatic Andean scenery.
